Canada Work Permit, or a Work Visa, is issued to eligible overseas individuals to work in that country for a specific time period. A work permit is always temporary in nature, but can often be extended from inside Canada. As one of the world’s leading economies Canada is a great destination for individuals seeking to work abroad.

There are many different options for obtaining a Canadian work permit. Some work permits require a job offer from a Canadian employer, some require that the employer provide a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA), while others require that a person has some sort of connection to Canada (previous education, spousal sponsorship, etc.)

People need to apply for a Work Visa only after getting a job offer or an employment contract from a Canadian employer. The employer must obtain from ESDC (Employment and Social Development Canada) an LMIA (Labour Market Impact Assessment), which gives them permission to recruit foreign skilled workers for occupations that cannot be filled in by citizens or permanent residents of Canada.

The Canadian Work Permit Visa allows business people, permanent workers, temporary workers, students and others to work in Canada. Typically, applicants need to have a job offer in hand in order to apply for the work permit visa. Get the right work permit for your situation

There are 2 types of work permits: open work permits and employer-specific work permits

Open work Permits

An open work permit allows you to work for any employer in Canada, except for an employer:

  • who is listed as ineligible on the list of employers who have failed to comply with the conditions or
  • who regularly offers striptease, erotic dance, escort services or erotic massages
  • Since an open work permit is not job-specific, you will not need the following when you apply for your work permit:

  • A Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) from Employment and Social Development Canada, or
  • proof that an employer has submitted an offer of employment through the Employer Portal and paid the employer compliance fee
Are you Eligible for Open work permits?

Below listed are the most of the eligible people qualifying under open work permit. You may be considered either one and for more details visit Canada.ca

  • If you are an international student who graduated from a designated learning institution and are eligible for the Post-Graduation Work Permit Program
  • If you are a spouse of a student who’s no longer able to meet the costs of their studies
  • If you have an employer-specific work permit and are being abused or at risk of being abused in relation to your job in Canada
  • If you had applied for permanent residence in Canada and waiting beyond the TAT
  • If you are a dependent family member of someone who applied for permanent residence
  • If you are the spouse or common-law partner of a skilled worker or international student
  • If you are the spouse or common-law partner of an applicant of the Atlantic Immigration Pilot Program

In each of these situations, you must meet additional criteria to be eligible. Sometimes, a condition will be written directly on your work permit.
These may include:

  • The type of work you can do,
  • The employer you can work for,
  • Where you can work, or
  • How long you can work.

Even if you have no specific conditions on your work permit, standard conditions that apply to all work permit holders

Not work for an employer in a business where there are reasonable grounds to suspect a risk of sexual exploitation of some workers, specifically:

  • Strip clubs,
  • Massage parlours, and
  • Escort agencies

Employer-specific work permits

An employer-specific work permit also known as closed work permits, that’s allows you to work according to the conditions on your work permit, which include:

  • The name of the employer you can work for
  • How long you can work
  • The location where you can work (if applicable)

Before applying for an employer-specific work permit, employers who wish to hire you must follow certain steps set by ESDC and provide you with a copy of an Labor market impact assessment the job market or a job offer to include in your application.

An Employer-specific work permit allows foreign nationals to work according to the conditions or limitations on the work permit. It limits a foreign national to one employer and is only authorized to work for one employer, in one position, in Canada.

Are you eligible for an Employer-specific Work Permit?

There are a number of ways to be eligible for an employer-specific work permit. This includes:

  • Academic credentials
  • Applicants who are part of the Atlantic Immigration Pilot Program (AIPP)
  • Dancers, actors, orchestral musicians, opera singers or someone in a related field
  • Entrepreneurs
  • Film or television production workers
  • French speaking skilled workers who intend to work in a Francophone community outside Quebec
  • Intra-company transferees
  • Professional Athlete or coach
  • Provincial Nominated applicants who have a job offer
  • Religious worker or someone doing charitable work
  • Repair or maintenance worker for industrial or commercial equipment
  • Researchers at certain Canadian institutions
  • Start-up Visa program applicants
  • Workers under a federal-provincial/territorial agreement
  • It is not usually required to have Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) if the occupation is listed above. If the person does not fit in any of the categories listed, they are still eligible to obtain an employer-specific work permit. However, they will need to have LMIA beforehand.
  • The LMIA is a document that an employer in Canada need to get before hiring a foreign worker. It shows that there is a need for a foreign worker to fill the job and the employer was not able to find a Canadian worker or permanent resident for that specific job.
  • You will have to leave Canada at the end of your authorized stay.

Super Visa

A Super Visa is a multi-entry visitor visa that allows eligible parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens and permanent residents to visit their children’s and grandchildren in Canada for longer periods of time. Super visa lets the parents to stay with them up to two years at a time and provides multiple entries with a maximum validity of ten years, or the passport’s expiry date whichever comes first

Once you get the super visa, you will be able to travel freely between Canada and their home country without needing to apply for a new visitor visa or the extension of their visitor visa, for a period of 2 years at a time. They are completely free from re-applying for a regular visitor’s visa or a Temporary Resident Visa (TRV)

The Government of Canada is clearly making an effort to help reunite Canadians with their parents and grandparents who are not with them.

Eligibility requirements for a Super Visa?

The eligibility requirements for Super Visa is somewhere similar to the Tourist Visa. However, additional documentation is required for super visa in order to ensure that the applicant parents or grandparents will be supporting the parents during their stay in Canada. Applicants must apply for a Super Visa from outside Canada and have to be allowed by the government of Canada to enter Canada.

To be eligible for a super visa, an applicant must::
  • Be the parent or grandparent of a Canadian citizen or a permanent resident of Canada
  • Have proof of parental relationship with child or grandchild
  • Have a signed invitation letter from the child or grandchild residing in Canada
  • Have documents to prove that child or grandchild meets the Low-Income Cut-Off (LICO) minimum
  • Have medical insurance from a Canadian insurance company that is valid for at least 1 year from the date of entry, at least $100,000 coverage
  • Proof that the medical insurance has been paid
  • Take an immigration medical exam and meet certain other conditions.

It is important to note that the Super Visa is still a temporary resident program. If you want to stay in Canada permanently, parents and grandparents must be sponsored for permanent residence.
